How To Do A French Twist – Hair Tutorial

A quick, simple
Aveda technique that I love is the
French twist. To begin the French twist, you will need
- duck bill clips
- Bobby pins
- smoothing brush,
- and a backcombing comb
First, you will have to do an ear to ear parting to separate the front from the back.
Then, you will create three sections in the back. The main section will create a mohawk; the Mohawk will leave out the other two sections that you will need.
After creating the three sections, you will take your Mohawk section and take one inch sections, going vertically downward, and backcomb them.
Last subsection in the Mohawk will be backcombed upwards (hold hair at zero degree angle).
After that, take the right side section, starting right behind the ear and backcombing outwards. Last subsection of the right backcomb towards the Mohawk section. then take the smoothing brush and begin to smooth the two sections over to the left side.
Take Bobby pins and pin first pin slightly left of c enter. Make a zig zag pattern going up, only about 4, then one going down to secure top pin. Backcomb left side, starting by the ear. After backcombing, smooth over to the right side, into a ponytail-like grip.
After smoothing, take pointer finger and hold the inside of the hair with the middle finger on the outside, tuck ends in towards the inside. Twist towards the inside, take the duckbill to hold the twist so you can place Bobby pins in the seam. After pinning the seam, remove the duck bill and place about one or two Bobby pins down the cone.
The end result should look like a cone. And that’s the quick simple way to make a French twist!

Copied to this blog post is an e-mail I wrote to my friend Alaina, who is considering a career in cosmetology:
“…I never expected that you would write me to say that you are considering going to cosmetology school! Have you taken a look at any of the schools in your area? Dallas is a great location for the hair industry. A former class mate of mine actually transferred to the school there and she loves it! When I first started looking into schools Aveda was at the top of my list. All I had to do was walk into the building and I knew it was for me. As a company they’re modern, connected and involved in a lot of great causes because they’re environmentally conscious. I hadn’t really tried many of their products, but I was probably in school for a week before I switched everything I use to Aveda – shampoo, conditioner, skin care – everything. As you know I’ve done some pretty crazy things to my hair over the past few months, but I feel like it’s healthier than it has been in years and for once I totally understand it. I even cancelled my Proactiv because ou r products last so much longer. I also don’t have to worry about anything being tested on animals and you know how I feel about that.
As you know I’m only a couple of months from graduating and it’s gone by so quickly. I think if you decide to go with Aveda you’ll love the way the curriculum works. Within a couple of months you’ll feel like you’re working in a full-fledged salon. I also feel like I’m being taught how to give individuals what they want. We don’t learn ‘cuts’ or have just one red, blonde or brown for everyone. We learn different techniques for creating complementary designs with guests’ hair and each guest’s color is totally unique to them. They’re even coming out with primary colors so we’ll be able to do some really amazing things in the near future.
Anyway, I won’t keep you I know that you are busy. Just write me back or call if you have any questions. I can’t wait to hear what you decide!
Love,
JoAnna”
