Ultimate Summer Job: Makeup in the Movies

by Abbey Webster on August 30, 2011

Being a total movie buff and cosmetology student, I’m always looking at the tiny details in movies. One of my favorite things to look at is the makeup. People assume makeup is just eye shadow and lip gloss, but it truly is so much more than that. You’re talking about any sort of wounds, bruise, deformity, and prosthetic. I love when I see really intense makeup.

If I could do makeup for any summer blockbuster movie, I’d probably want to do an action film, like Transformers. Because I love costume scars and I think that would be really awesome to be able to create realistic wounds all over the body. It takes some talent to blend the makeup with the prostatic wounds to make it look real, and if I could learn that or do that, I think it would be really cool.

Also a horror/sci-fi film like SAW or Star Trek; I feel like in these types of films it could really challenge your craft, even coming from the best beauty school, trying to transform a normal person into this character. Especially if the character is supposed to look completely different like Worf in Star trek.

Or maybe a Victorian film, something more Renaissance. I could just see it now, even though it would have to be simple makeup, you could definitely have some intense, bold makeup choices; maybe in the eye liner or lip color.
