My Massage Technique

by Laura Seeley on June 13, 2011

When doing a massage I like to focus in between the shoulder blades up to the nape. From clients who are on their feet all day to clients who work at a desk this is ideal. As hairdressers we know being on our feet all day causes a lot of stress on our back. People who sit hunched over at a desk all day also endure a lot of stress on their back especially the spine. I have found focusing on on the back in between the shoulder blades and then working up to the nape can relieve a lot of that tension that builds up due to physical and mental stress. In most cases this area is where the worst knots will build up. I like to begin my srr’s with a blue oil handshake to relax the guest as much as possible then work my way from the shoulders down to the shoulder blades with my hands never losing contact.

The amount of pressure you will use depends on the guest you never want to start out hard though. Focus on this area for a few minutes then slowly work up the spine until you reach the bottom of the head. As your moving up stop to work on any problem spots you may come across. Spend a couple minutes on the nape slowing down your rhythm and then go back into the handshake for another minute or so and release contact however you choose. My mom and husband have horrible back and neck problems and they love this.
