How to repair dry damaged hair

by JoAnna Wallace on June 23, 2011

I chose a topic near and dear to my heart this week. Personally, I like to do a lot to my hair. In the past year I’ve been a red-head, a red-head with blonde highlights, two-toned brown and bleach blonde, then a level 3 all over and now platinum. Needless to say, I’m like a chameleon when it comes to my hair and because of that I am always looking for ways to repair my damaged hair.

One thing I would suggest to anyone who finds themselves struggling with dry, damaged hair is shampoo LESS. Even someone with healthy hair doesn’t need to shampoo every day, and when your hair is fried you’re just stripping it of essential oils by over-washing. Invest in a shower cap!

On days I do wash my hair – every other to every two days – I use Aveda’s Damage Remedy shampoo and conditioner. I would also suggest investing in the treatment and using a warm towel or your shower cap during the 2 – 5 minutes the treatment sits. I also use the Daily Hair Repair even on days where I haven’t washed my hair because I find that it does not weigh down the hair and attribute to that ‘greasy’ look a lot of other leave-in products leave you with.

So living in Florida it is common to have dry damaged hair! Be it from sun, color, or iron work it is not an uncommon issue. I had this problem prior to coming to cosmetology school and would just use products that claimed they had moisture or said they repaired damage to no avail. After coming to Aveda I learned a lot about this topic. First, it starts with proper care and maintenance. At Aveda we carry an amazing line of products, including our Damage Remedy line. Damage Remedy Shampoo and conditioner are a gret way to start. For seriously damaged hair the line has a restructuring trtment used once a week. To continue the repair even when styling we have a damage remedy Daily Hair Repair which also protects during styling. Come see us and we will help you get the damage under control!
