Core Massage to relieve postures discomfort

by Cari Dunn on June 10, 2011

One of our shortcomings as a society is the way we hold our posture. The way we walk, sit and even work can all put stress and tension on our bodies. The everyday stressors from just being human can really take a toll on an individual. All of which helps me to prefer focusing more on the torso when providing a massage. I choose this area in particular due to our torso being our core, the very center of which we pull our strength from. Normally, whatever a client states is their problem area is where I would focus.

As we progress from day to day doing housework, working at our places of employment, or even attending school and especially for those who do all three of the above can really put wear and tear on that area of the body. Some of the muscles of the human torso include the abdominals located at the front of our bodies (the belly), the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, and trapezius located in our back. Although they are many more muscles too numerous to mention, these muscles of the torso works in conjunction to help us to do the many things that we do daily. The erector spinae in particular runs up and down the back vertically to provide support for the spine. Regular slouching from bad posture can really cause this muscle to ache Hence, the latissimus dorsi which wraps like a girdle from the midline of the spine to the serratus muscles (located at the sides of the torso) helps us to “twist”. Twisting from working or moving incorrectly can also cause these muscles to ache with pain. Lastly, the trapezius that helps us to shrug our shoulders, hold our head up or to even bend the neck encounter terrible strain from working at a desk job or even sitting at a computer for long hours typing a paper can ache. All of these reasons cause me to most definitely prefer to perform and focus massage in this area.
