Kate’s Royal Wedding Hairstyle

by Molly Jacobs on May 16, 2011

How about that Royal Wedding! I was stunned by the extravagance, the guests, the outfits, the hats… But, hands down it was Kate’s beauty that floored me the most. She was perfect. Long flowing locks, a to-die-for dress, simple yet elegant, Modern yet respectful…Prince Willy is one lucky guy!

As a stylist, I have to comment on her hair and overall aesthetic for the big day. Personally, I think her decision to wear the long flowing curls was a good move. Apparently she broke Royal tradition of wearing hair up, but she’s had a lot of firsts, like going to college, so more power to her! The long curling hair accentuated the beautiful dress, and was greatly complemented by the crown and veil.

I would have curled her hair differently though, because they fell throughout the ceremony. When we first saw Kate the waves were formed and flowing- by the end of the wedding they looked limp. To fix this I would have prepped her hair with AirControl hairspray. Then I would have taken large sections and curled figure 6 curls with a 1.5 inch iron, for looser wave. I would have set them with Brilliant hairspray, which is my favorite hairspray for curls because it provides the perfect amount of hold, and retains moisture and shine. After I set all the hair I would have broken the curls with a wide tooth comb. Some Brilliant Humectant through the ends would give a nice relaxed finish while still allowing curl definition. Then I would set the whole thing with Control Force. I guarantee these curls would not have fallen by the end of the ceremony.

She must have gotten a touch up styling between the ceremony and reception though, because once she came out in dress number two her hair looked stunning! No limpness at all. A to-die-for soft set that every guest I give long layers to wants, her hair definitely looked royal. She’s got some traditional long layers going, a little back flow for some face framing. It’s a great cut, one of the most popular ones I give. I’ve had more than one guest come to me since the wedding and ask for that hair style.

To get this look, rough dry your hair until it’s almost dry. Next, section hair, and starting at the nape use a ceramic round brush on medium to large sections of hair to set your hair with a soft wave. After forming the curl, pin it up and set with Brilliant hair spray. Follow this up the back of the head, then the sides, bottom to top. After you’ve set, pinned, and sprayed all curls, let them fall. Break through with fingers or a wide tooth comb, and finish with Control Force.

I can’t wait to follow our newest Princess’s future fashions and hairdos. I have a feeling they will continue to be modern, elegant, tasteful, and gorgeous. She will be a role model and inspiration to all of us.
