Rules of success in Hair Styling School
In any profession it is important for one to have rules. Personal guidelines define character and values. As a hairstylist I have three most prominent rules to live by ensuring that I am the most successful hairstylist that I can be. I haven’t always known that I wanted to be a cosmetologist but in every line of work I have been in I have developed a set of standards for myself.
Dedication is extremely important to me, specifically dedication to the continued education of my craft. My journey of learning has only just begun, and it won’t stop when I have my license and I leave the Aveda institute to explore my skill. Dedication to attend every class and every day I can at the Aveda institute. I knew when I started beauty school that I would struggle to keep up with people who had known they wanted to do this their whole life and it was true. I have kept up and I have dutifully shown up every day and soaked up everything I possibly could.
Genuine connections are vital to me. In such a personal line of work with such a high touch nature I have been terrified from the beginning of losing my true self. Being so personal and close with so many people I am afraid of being fake and telling people what they want to hear until I don’t even know who I am anymore. Every guest I see sees the real me. I always try to connect with my guest on a real level. I strive to earn my client’s trust with my sincerity. People come to a salon for more than just to get their hair done; they come to connect and talk. This is one of the reasons I began this career. I am an empathic person and I like to help people cosmetically or emotionally. The only way I can make their outer beauty reflect their inner beauty is to truly know them.
My third rule is having a sound technical skill. I not only want to be able to perform my craft but I want to master it. To genuinely tell someone they have a great haircut, they will need a great haircut. A sound technical skill is the backbone of my entire career. I practice with earnest every chance I get. Once I can give my client a great service every single time I won’t have to worry about being fake to them and the genuine me will be allowed to flourish. The only way I will obtain my skill and eventually master it is through dedication to my craft and clients.
I have always practiced these values, learning the importance of technical skill as a carpenter, learning customer service in retail and always being dedicated to my work. These are my three rules for success and I guess they will still have to stand the test of time but with dedication, sincere caring and a solid technical backbone I have hope for my future as a cosmetologist.
