More Aveda rules for success.

by Anthony Pernicka on February 8, 2011

Walking into a beauty salon no one ever thinks about how those stylists. They have no idea about how hard we had to study and how many crazy experiences we went through in beauty school. As a student at Aveda Institute South Florida, we go through a 13 month program split into a total of five phases, three days as week for ten hours a day. The majority of the students who attend school here have jobs on the days we are not in school. Some students have children who require care 24/7 which gives them little to no time off during the week.

With so many different factors into the school equation, it is important to remember one of many rules, and that is to “leave your business at the door”. Everyone has a personal life and some may be going through a lot; that is why when you come into school, you should leave your personal life and drama at the door because you have no idea who you are rubbing your attitude on to. Also, guests do not want to have a melancholy or uptight stylist. Everyone can read when you are either upset or sad, and of course it is going to affect your work on your guests. Since we all have magnificent work, we should also all have magnificent attitudes! We all feed off of each other in beauty school, so if everyone is exerting positive energy when they are dealing with challenges that we may experience in life, or in school, we can all use each other as stepping stones to greatness!

Continuing on the topic above about attitude, you must also “always wear a smile”. This rule connects very closely to the one above as your guests are always going to make a first impression within the first seven seconds they meet you and that will be the deciding factor of how the rest of the service will go. Not only will it effect your guests, but it will also think about your fellow stylists/students and educators. It will be difficult to get work done promptly or properly unless you bite the bullet, and put on a smile. Everyone loves people who have positive outlooks on life, and is someone who they can go to and talk in confide in. After all, we are all family here!

The last rule, but not most definitely not the least is “put your heart into it”. That rule applies to anything either in beauty school or in life. Everything is a balancing act. Whatever you are putting out, you will get in if you are portraying yourself as a nice, kind person in return. You can even apply it to when you are doing hair, you can benefit greatly by giving your guest your heart.

All in all, we start out as equals and must strive to do our best and even as an Advanced II student, I can see how much I have grown, not only as a person but also as a stylist. Once again, whatever you do, do your best and put your all into it. You will never know what you are able to achieve unless you strive for greatness. This is our education and we are the deciding factor what we will learn!
