Life as an AVEDA South Florida student

by Anthony Pernicka on November 6, 2010

The AVEDA Institute South Florida is comfortably nestled between the happening metro areas of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. Needless to say, there is never a lack of fun, hip, cultural, and exciting things to do here! While we keep a hard working schedule here (three ten hour days a week), we definitely make time for fun and relaxation. South Florida is one of the trendiest places in the world, so we are constantly inspired by the fashions we see, and motivated to stay current and contemporary.

The good times start at school. Here you will meet friends that will last a lifetime, and they will introduce you to so many new ideas, locales, people, and activities. Not far from here are some of the greatest malls I have ever been to. The Aventura Mall, The Galleria in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, CocoWalk in Coconut Grove, the Falls in Kendall, Lincoln Road Mall on South Beach… and don’t forget the Sawgrass Mills Outlet mall in Sunrise. At the Sawgrass, you’ll find the greatest deals imaginable: outlet and clearance Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstroms, Michael Kors, Coach, Juicy… the list goes on and on, but be prepared to dedicate an entire day to shopping!

A great thing about South Florida is the melting pot of cultures. You will find some of the greatest restaurants in the world here. One of my favorite hidden gems is the Las Olas Cafe on Las Olas Boulevard in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. This quaint and romantic bistro is hidden off the main walk, and is such a lovely experience. There are some amazing Cuban restaurants here, the best one I’ve been to being De Rodriguez on South Beach. If you go, you have to get Ceviche! There are so many cultures here, which makes for some amazingly great and authentic food: Greek, Persian, Sushi, Indian, Spanish, Thai…. no matter what kind of food you desire I guarantee you can find some within twenty minutes of wherever you decide to live.

And of course there are the beaches, which personally I can never get enough of. Fort Lauderdale Beach is the one I visit the most, there are awesome seafood restaurants, easy parking, and the water is the most beautiful crystal clear turquoise. Some other popular beaches are South Beach, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach, Hollywood, and Hallandale. There are always easy to find public parking garages, and plenty of convenient stores in case you forget sunscreen or ice cold beverages.

The nightlife here… well, it’s the greatest. You’ll probably see celebrities at the clubs on South Beach. Some of the most happening spots right now are LIV Nightclub, Mansion, Set, and Soho Studios… just to name a few. There are plenty of other things to do at night besides dancing, the restaurants on Lincoln Road are open until the wee hours of the morning most nights. Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale is always fun and lively. Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, West Palm Beach… you’ll find food, fun, and friends around every corner.

I wouldn’t trade the educational, social, or cultural experience that I’m getting down here for anything! I’m learning so much at school, I’m having such a blast on my days off, and I know I’ll be able to find a job as soon as I graduate… There are so many salons down here, and upscale ones at that. Plus, there are always industry events happening around Broward and Dade counties. Hair shows, Fashion shows, Beauty events… they happen almost every weekend. You wouldn’t be able to get this kind of experience in more suburban areas, and you wouldn’t be able to have so much fun up north… I mean, our summers last from March until November. Hope to see you at the AVEDA Institute South Florida soon, we can’t wait to have you!
